  1. Installation of the X-Surf IDE driver:
  2. --------------------------------------

  4. Just copy the file "XSurfIDE" to the sys:expansion drawer.
  5. With the start of Binddrivers, the IDE drivers will be
  6. loaded, and if harddrives are connected to the X-Surf, they
  7. are mounted automatically. The device name is "scsi.device",
  8. and it can be used with HDToolbox or HDInstTools.
  9.  
  10. Atapi-devices like CD-Roms, CD-Changers, IDE-Zip or LS120
  11. drives can be accessed with the name "xsurf_atapi.device".
  12. Please mind that device names are case-sensitive when
  13. editing your mountfiles. These two names only have lower
  14. case letters. 
  15.  
  16. Unit numbers:
  17. -------------

  19. The 3,5" and the 2,5" port can be used independantly, you
  20. can connect up to four IDE/Atapi devices. The numbering is a
  21. follows:
  22.  
  23. Unit 0: Master on the 3,5" port
  24. Unit 1: Slave on the 3,5" port
  25. Unit 2: Master on the 2,5" port
  26. Unit 3: Slave on the 2,5" port
  27.  
  28. Before connecting a 2,5" harddrive, check it's power
  29. consumption. The traces on the X-Surf can only stand a
  30. current of 300mA. This low value is only reached with modern
  31. notebook-harddrives (minimum 10GB). Especially the old
  32. harddrives (less than 1GB) consume more than 1,5A on
  33. startup. This may burn the power traces on the X-Surf. Of
  34. cource, such a defect is not covered by warranty.

  36. Compatibility
  37. -------------

  39. The software devices are compatible with drives larger than
  40. 4GB. To be compatible with all the filesystens there are,
  41. the two standards TD64 and NSD64 are supported. 
  42. Please mind that the devices already support NSD64, so they
  43. must not be patched in order to work with OS3.5.

  46. Known bugs:

  49. The date in the version string is not printed properly. This
  50. does not affect proper function of the drivers!

  53. Have fun with the X-Surf IDE driver, even if it took a bit
  54. longer than I promised. Anyway, I think a free driver that
  55. is four months late is much better than a license that is
  56. 25,- US$ each.
